Press Release on Diocese Installation Ceremony


 

Kallianpur, October 13, 2012 : Erection of Diocese of Udupi and Instalation ceremony of Most Rev Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo as Bishop of the new Diocese of Udupi will be held on October 15 at Kallianpur Milagres Cathedral Grounds. 

Speaking on the press meet at Milagres Cathedral office Fr. Stany said that the guests and Bishop designate will be given a reception at Cathedral entrance at 2pm. The designation of guests and Bishops will be given a warm reception at the Cathedral Entrance. The installation of Bishop of Diocese and formation of Udupi Diocese will take place during the Mass. Apostolic Nuncio in India, Dr Salvotore Pennacchio will be the principal prelate along with Bishop Most Rev Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, as the main celebrant of the Mass.

Apostolic Nuncio in India and Representative of Pope Most Rev Dr Salvatore Pennacchio, Archbishop of Bangalore, Most Rev Dr Bernard Moras, Puttige Math Seer Sri Sugunendratheertha Swamiji, AICC  Rajya Sabha Member Oscar Fernandes, Minister for Muzrai, Port and Inland Water Transport Kota Srinivas Poojary, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Jayaprakash Hegde, Udupi MLA Raghupathy Bhat and Deputy Commissioner Dr M T Reju will be guests of honor on the occasion.

The expected participants for this unique ceremony will be around 10,000 to 12,000. On the other hand, besides the Nuncio, around 33 Bishops and more than 250 priests are expected to be the part of the grand celebration.

It may be recalled that Pope Benedict XVI announced the formation of the diocese of Udupi on July 16, 2012 and appointed the present Bishop of Shimoga diocese Most Rev Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo as the first Bishop of Udupi diocese. The new Udupi diocese was part of Mangalore diocese since 1887. The Catholics settled in this part of district in the middle of 16th century, most of them were Konkani speaking migrants from Goa. On July 16, the Pope Benedict XVI announce the erection of the diocese of Udupi and also its First Bishop to lead the new diocese.

The new diocese of Udupi consists of 48 parishes belonging to Karkala, Udupi and Kundapur taluks. There are 1.25 lakh Catholics, 58 diocesan priests, 20 religious priests / brothers and 225 religious sisters in Udupi diocese.
